Participants & profiles in Moodle

The Participants tool is found under the Course menu block on your Moodle course homepage. From this tool you can edit the personal information you share with other Moodle participants, modify your Moodle settings, upload a picture of yourself, and send private messages to any of the participants in your course.

DO NOT change your username or password when editing your profile. Moodle logins are based on NetLink IDs, and these are not administered or updated within Moodle.

View Your Moodle Profile

  • In the Course Menu block, click on Participants and then on Your Name.
  • To view your current profile information, click on the Profile tab.
  • To view all the posts you have made in the discussion forums for your Moodle course, click on the Forum posts tab.
  • To update your profile information, click on the Edit profile tab.

Editing Your Moodle Profile

After you have logged into your Moodle course, there are two Profile settings we recommend you check before you begin working on your course:

  1. Indicate whether or not you wish to be automatically subscribed via e-mail to Forums.
(Meaning that you can choose whether or not you want to automatically receive e-mail copies of postings made to Forums in which you are participating.)
  2. Indicate whether or not you want Moodle to highlight new and unread posts in the Forums for you.
(Meaning that you will be able to quickly and easily recognize which posts you have not yet opened/read.)

To adjust these settings:

  • In the Course Menu block, click on Participants.
  • Click on your name to open your profile.
  • Click on the Edit Profile tab.
  • Click on the Show Advanced button.
  • To subscribe to forums you post to (meaning that you will receive notifications of postings in your e-mail), in the Forum auto-subscribe drop-down menu, select “Yes, when I post, subscribe me to that forum.”
  • To highlight new, unread posts in the Forums (so you can easily recognize which posts you have not read yet), in the Forum tracking drop-down menu, select “Yes: highlight new posts for me.”

    Edit Profile Settings

  • To save your preferences, click the Update profile button at the bottom of the Edit Profile window.

Add a Photo to Your Moodle Profile

Upload a picture of yourself (optional). This picture will appear next to your username in the discussion forums, etc. To do this:

  1. Make sure you have a digital picture of yourself (.jpg or .gif) saved on your computer.
(Photos should be small in dimension - Moodle will resize your image to 100 x 100 pixels)
  2. Click on the Edit Profile tab and scroll down to the Picture of section.
  3. Browse to find your picture on your computer and then clickOpen to upload it to Moodle.
  4. To save your preferences, click the Update profile button at the bottom of the Edit Profile window.

  • Click on the Send message button.
  • Type your message in the message box provided.
  • Click on the Send message button.
Your message will appear to the recipient either as a pop-up when they enter their Moodle course, or will be sent to them as an e-mail, depending on how they have set their own Profile preferences.
